October is my favorite month of the year. Recently, I faced a ā€œmomā€ challenge where we were asked to think about what’s fun for us. Not a definition of fun, but the things we’d like to do if we had three extra hours or could plan our perfect day.

For me, that includes coffee, spending time outside, and all things fall-related.

So, I’ve decided to dedicate October to the things I love doing. That means more pumpkin, some extra baking, more fresh air, watching the trees change colors in my favorite spots, and maybe even more watercolors. (If my son has anything to do with it, some hip-hop dancing will sneak in too!)

Talking to other moms, I’ve realized there’s a point when we can spend more time for ourselves. So, what are some destinations around Northwest Arkansas that make for a great day trip for moms?

How to Make Mom Day Trips More Successful

My idea for other moms with this concept is that you could drive somewhere, grab a coffee, and then leave. For some schedules, this makes sense right after school drop-off, leaving you plenty of time in your day. For others, you might need to plan this around a morning or afternoon nap.

Some might consider sharing this experience with a friend, or believe that the isolation in the drive is part of the joy. Whatever route you choose, the goal is to find space for yourself, doing what you love in the way you love to do it. I remember when we first moved back to the area; I had a three-year-old, and so much had changed. So, this is how I navigated learning about a new place and enjoying it through my favorite season!

  • Plan to visit the places you want. Let your destination be what makes you happy.
  • Remember you’ll probably have a kid with you. Charge the tablets, prepare some car activities, and make snacks easy to grab.
  • Grab a coffee or a treat. Drive through your favorite local spot or Sonic and order something that feels like a little luxury.
  • Find a time when you can be alone. If possible, set aside a solo morning or afternoon.
  • Download a book or podcast, and make sure to charge your headphones!
  • Ask a friend to join you. Sometimes, meaningful conversations are the best part of the trip.
  • Pick something new and use it as a reason to explore a different place.
  • Consider bringing wheels. A bike or scooter for your child can make stops more enjoyable for both of you, especially if there’s an ADA-friendly trail you could experience.

Daytrip Drives for Northwest Arkansas Moms

The main idea is to do things that are enjoyable for you. Choose places and outings that bring you happiness, and tell your kids: ā€œThis is something fun for mom.ā€ Let them know they’ll have their turn, but this trip is about filling your own cup. (And, be ok with that answer!)

Pea Ridge National Military Park | Garfield

  • Enjoy a peaceful drive through Pea Ridge National Military Park, where the rolling hills are covered with golden leaves each fall. You can explore by car with an audio guide or take a short trail walk at one of the historic battle sites. Kids will love climbing on cannons and exploring open fields, while moms can relax, enjoy the quiet beauty, and learn a bit of history. Visit early in the morning to watch the fog rise off the fields. Drive with your window down and listen to the birds chirping and critters running about. Bring a picnic to enjoy at one of the designated areas, and don’t forget your camera—the overlooks are stunning this time of year.

Fun fact: Visiting a military park on the day of the battle was one of my 40 somethings activities, and this was the place! We had a delayed anniversary trip that year, and I got to enjoy the kind of afternoon described above – kid in the back seat, windows down, audio tour playing, and I visited every designated spot!

Moms can enjoy the wide-open space for a peaceful walk, while kids can safely roam, run, and play on the lawns. If you want to stay longer, drive into downtown Prairie Grove afterward for antique shopping and a cozy coffee shop visit.

  • Stretching across 12,000 acres of Ozark forest, it’s an easy spot to escape into nature. The Hobbs State Park visitor center has interactive exhibits that keep kids entertained while you grab a map and plan your route. Whether you want a short, paved walk, a stroller-friendly loop, or a more adventurous hike through the woods, Hobbs has it all. During the fall, the trails burst with color, and numerous benches and overlooks provide a place to stop and take a breath. If you’re up for it, pack snacks and watch the sunset from a scenic spot near Beaver Lake.
