Well, we added a new cereal snack mix to our list – Chicken Feed Snack Mix. Little Man dressed up as a chicken for Halloween this year so it only seemed fitting that we plan a snack mix that fit the theme. Mama got a little lazy on this one and picked items that could just be stirred together instead of making a sauce and baking it. From the likes of the empty tub and text messages, it was a hit. So, what exactly goes in Chicken Feed?

I will admit this one take a little extra, but it makes a bunch and we had a bunch to feed. This would make great party favors for a cowboy, farm, or hayride party and could be mixed ahead and stored in airtight containers. It’s a great treat to take to neighbors at the holidays or in spring when its good to get back out again. We really looked for “flavors of the season”. I’ll try to list some alternatives below if you were going more festive at a different time of year.

Alternatives or substitutions

  • Smores snack mix – Golden Grahams, mini chocolate chips, marshmallows – could add in pretzels, rice chex, and nuts for more salty
  • Instead of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios, use Chocolate Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate Crunch or Ancient Grains
  • I liked the texture of the butter puff corn, but it was not necessary and could totally be thrown out.
  • Also, if you like to add a little cheese flavor, I noticed that Cheetos has a new white cheddar variety out for the holidays. They were a smaller size and would be a good addition.
  • Veggie chips or veggie straws would work too and of course any of the vegetable root chips
  • Other nuts could be used like a mixed nut variety or cashew pieces
  • Candy Corn really just adds color so it could be left out
  • Hard covered chocolate candies or Reese’s pieces would be yummy in this as well.

The whole point here was to create a fun snack mix with different flavors that you can buy in a bag and to keep it thematic and share a treat with our friends. I can’t wait until Little Man is big enough to actually help me stir these up and take them to our friends.
