So, I’ve been using a new app called Queepsake. I probably ran across it from one of those Instagram ads – you know the smart kind that targets new moms. But, I love it because it sends me a couple questions each day. At first it was just one, but after my free trial, I upgraded to the 2 question level and I can do unlimited additional posts myself and include pictures.

I just have them saved in my phone as a contact. Its nice because they ask me about things I’m not usually thinking are so obvious but I know I’ll be so glad to have saved in the future. It catches the every day little things and makes them special. Because these days I look up and he is half grown each week!

This past week, a couple questions came about little man’s name. One asked the names we considered and one asked the story behind his name. While I’ve really committed to not putting his full name out on the interwebs (social included) for security reasons, it is know that little man’s name is Joshua.

We knew without doubt our first pick name for a boy and a girl. Back when Mr. McKinney and I were dating, he was reading in the book of Joshua from the Bible. We had both just walked really hard roads where the professional steps we had taken made sense, but the location did not. It was hard to pick up and move from where we were in comfort to where God was calling us to be, but we did it.

Joshua 1:9 | God's promises to protect us and be faithful to us were part of the reason we chose this name for our son

And, it hurt, and it was hard. But, we clung to the only thing we had to cling – if God was calling us to something, he would see us through it. Because He had done it before. That promise and those experiences were the only thing we had to cling to. I remember thinking in those early days how impressed I was that Chris was working so deeply into the words of that book in the Bible. I knew the “big story” and the jest, but I don’t know that I had ever read the book word for word. There are several chapters in the middle that walk through a bunch of military battles. And, how often many people see the book of Ruth or Esther as “girl stories,” I think I looked at Joshua as a “boy story.”

But, you guys, as I have been reading it word for word, I have written so many words in my margins. (I don’t really draw illustrations, but these words are sure making a picture.) For language development, we are supposed to be reading out loud to little man. So, why not the book that brought him his name!

The book of Joshua in the Bible was our inspiration for naming our son. A constant reminder that God keeps His promises!

One thing that has really surprised me reading this book is the reminder of “rest.” Just this morning, I read the words in the latter part of chapter 23 and it reminded me that “the people rested.” We know I don’t do that well, but each time it happens they meet the Lord. They see what He has done, they recognize the promises fulfilled. They rejoice and they make a memorial; a visual reminder to themselves to remember.

That is a posture I want more. That is a posture I want to teach little man. I don’t want to be too busy striving that I do not have time to stop and reflect. God keeps His promises. He has from the beginning of time and He continues to meet us just where we are day by day, week by week, moment by moment.

If you are looking for some some shirts or apparel to help you express this, let me encourage you to check out Elly & Grace. This is not a sponsored post or an affiliation of any type, I just bought mother’s day gifts here and I’m loving them. And, they have some fun Joshua 1:9 references.
