This new recipe for Green Smoothie Toddler Food Pouches is a throwback to our summer discovery of Green Smoothies (version 1 and version 2). I’m always looking for ways to keep vegetables in our diet and introduce more vegetables to my toddler. He is not a picky eater, but it’s hard to get past the desire for chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, and all the chips. I can usually disguise anything if I put it in a smoothie (or between a tortilla and call it a taco).

It is no surprise that we eat a lot of Green Smoothies at our house. I started making them 2 summers ago after my husband broke his ankle and we were looking for foods rich in magnesium for bone regeneration. He didn’t really stick to the habit, but that was also about the time we were introducing foods to Little Man, and he loved them. (And, when I rewarded myself with a fancy blender.) He has a green smoothie every morning and it gives me a great way to use up fruit that starting to get too soft at our house. This spring is the first time I really had to just buy frozen fruit to make a full batch.

Somewhere during quarantine time, Little Man decided he wanted a break from smoothies and just wanted to eat all the pouches. I was really trying to limit the number of times we went to the store and it felt silly to keep buying pouches when I had a shelf of green smoothies in my freezer. So, I got to digging and found a set of fillable pouches with my Infantino Squeeze Station at the bottom of my pantry. I thought why not. I love that thing. I wanted to register for it when we had Little Man, but forgot and then later found this one at our local Thrift Store, never opened and it felt like a total score (especially for a bleary-eyed mama searching for the small joys).

For the record and note to other mamas, my pediatrician told me at our two-year-old appointment that we could probably get away from pouches. But I made an executive mama decision. It is a guarantee that he will eat straight pureed vegetables and fruit and requests these at least once a day, so I keep buying them. I mean if applesauce pouches can be a side option for fast food kid’s meals then what is wrong with these. I’m not going to dictate what age you eat these, you are the mama….you get to make that call! Also, we call this “green ice cream” and I sometimes just pour it into a bowl instead of the pouch and he eats it with a spoon. Whatever makes him eat his veggies!

Tropical Green Smoothie Baby Food Pouches

These baby and toddler food pouches are filled with a tropical fruit blend stirred together with a spinach or kale blend. The green smoothie mixture is full of fruit and antioxidants and none of the preservatives for your baby, toddler, or adult to eat.

Ingredients

Blend 1 ingredients list – banana, spinach, tropical fruit

  • 3 overripe bananas
  • 4 big handfuls of fresh spinach or blend with kale
  • 4 Cups tropical or mixed fruit chunks
  • 2 Cups coconut water or fruit nectar

Blend 2 ingredients list – banana, spinach, pineapple, carrot, mango

  • 3 overripe bananas
  • 4 big handfuls of fresh spinach or blend with kale
  • 8 ounces crushed pineapple with juice
  • 1 Cup shredded carrots
  • 14 oz mango pulp
  • 1 Cup Coconut water or fruit nectar

Instructions

  • Place bananas in the bottom of a blender.
  • Add other fruits and vegetables to the blender.
  • Pour liquid over blender contents.
  • Blend on medium for about 30 seconds.
  • Switch and blend on high to a smooth puree.
  • Stop blender and check the texture.
  • With a spatula or spoon, push down and vegetables that got stuck at the top or along the sides.
  • Blend again until all the small bits of spinach are completely pureed.
  • Use a pouch making tool to fill the pouches with the mixture.
  • Refrigerate for up to 2 days or freeze and thaw individually.
  • The mixture can also be stored in mason jars and frozen to drink with a straw.

Notes

  • The mixture should only be kept in the refrigerator for 2 days. If the pouches or jars cannot be consumed in that time, freeze and thaw individually before consuming.
  • My son also likes to eat this out of a bowl with a spoon. We call it green ice cream.
  • Other fruits can be substituted in for the ingredients listed here – blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, orange, kiwi, peaches, nectarines
  • We use this same mixture to make regular Green Smoothies. I freeze it in mason jars or plastic storage containers and thaw one each evening for the next day.
