Maybe a quick weekend away with your girlfriends or sisters is just what you need, then let me suggest Waco, Texas as the perfect Girlfriend’s Weekend Destination.
My sisters-in-law and I recently got away for a quick weekend without husbands and kids. It’s always fun to break your weekly rhythm and do something new together, especially when it involves shopping, new restaurants, home decor, and Netflix! (thanks mom for watching Little Man and letting me get a mani and pedi to shop with my sisters!)
I’ve been to Waco multiple times, but I was traveling with some newbies and there were a few things on our list that were Waco Visit Musts:
- Magnolia
- great Mexican food
- Perfect home finds
- Coffee
Anything beyond this list was a bonus. You know. There is something nice about traveling and letting the mood and new discoveries of the day determine the destination. So, with a Trip Advisor app, some recommendations from natives and newbies, and an open schedule, we set out on the perfect quick weekend getaway to Waco, Texas.
I’m personally convinced that any good girl weekend, needs a fun t-shirt. I designed a shirt and my sister made them for us, but we had so many comments on our shirt while we were out that I thought I’d make the design available in my Etsy shop for download. What more could a gal want on a Waco weekend?
Silos. Shiplap. Coffee. Tacos.
If you are looking for a shirt design or need help with ideas, reach out, and let’s see if we can make a t-shirt design for your Waco Weekend. Or, check out my listings for our shirt design and a handful of others.
Accommodations in Waco Texas
We spent our weekend at the perfect vacation rental house for girlfriends in Waco. Our husbands may not love it because we all came home with some dream home design ideas. It would also work for a couple of couples, but I highly recommend Airbnb or Vrbo as a place to find your weekend accommodations. Check out these destination sites for downtown condos, full 100-year-old farmhouses, and even several properties that were on Fixer Upper. This town is ready for siblings, college parents, and classmates re-gathering.
Of course, you also have all the hotel chain options that you can find through your regular rewards program and accommodation website. I would suggest paying attention to the location of things you want to do. We considered a couple of spots that were within walking distance to downtown attractions and since we had multiple places we wanted to go, it wasn’t necessary, but being within walking distance of all the things listed in our itinerary could be super convenient.
Dining in Waco Texas
Waco is a hipster college town and it does not have a shortage of GREAT places to eat all over the city. Some of the places we loved and considered were:
- Ninfas – those fajitas!!!!
- Hecho en Waco – new to me, but I’m so glad we ate here and I would recommend it to anyone
- Milos
- Union Hall
- Health Camp – serving burgers and malts since 1948
- Rudy’s BBQ – it’s way more than a gas station, the BBQ is great and its a perfect spot on your way out of town to fill up with gas and grab breakfast tacos
- JPetal Poke – recommended by a local
- Vitek’s Market BBQ – check out the Gut Pak
- Buzzard Billy’s Bar and Grill – New Orleans flavor
Coffee Shops:
- Common Grounds – super college and really sweet drinks, but it is just one of my favorite spots in Waco.
- Pinewood Coffee – recommended by a local friend
- Dichotomy Coffee
- Fabled Bookstore drinks
- Cafe Cappuccino – my husband I ate here on a previous trip for a perfect Sunday brunch
- Heritage Roastery – I loved the location out at Heritage Homestead. Just be warned, it is PACKED with college students. But, I love that they use Pink House Alchemy Arkansas-based syrups.
Biggest thing I suggest,
- Ask people who’ve been
- Check out Trip Advisor, Yelp, and Pinterest
- As a local where to go, that’s usually the best spot!

Waco Weekend, Girlfriends 3-day Itinerary
Thursday:
- Half-day travel
- Stop in Corsicana, Texas, or West, TX for lunch
- Dr. Pepper Museum
- Walk around the shops downtown
- Browse through Fabled Bookstore and Spice Village
- Dinner at Hecho en Waco or Ninfas
- Back to the hotel/Airbnb for a little Fixer Upper binge in prep for the next day
Friday:
- If you were not able to make a reservation, get up and get your name on the list at Magnolia Table
- Kill time at a local coffee shop, I recommend Common Grounds for the college town feel, but there are soooooo many great little coffee shops
- Go back and get in line for your spot at Magnolia Table. Take a spin through the Magnolia Market while you wait.
- Another way to spend the morning is to take the Waco Tours Bus tour around town. It’s a great introduction to the city, the sites, and to map out your destinations later in the day. It starts and ends from the parking lot across from the Silos.
- Enjoy Breakfast at Magnolia Table – I’ll be honest, this was not my favorite restaurant that we dinned with, so you might find sleeping in and having a light breakfast at your hotel is better and then come to Magnolia Table for lunch. That will be my plan next time.
- Check out Harps Design Co. This is Clint Harp’s shop who makes and builds many pieces that are seen on each episode of Fixer Upper, but this talented team hand-build beautiful pieces of furniture.
- Head over to Magnolia at the Silos and shop, explore, play, and enjoy the sun! Seriously, there are so many ways to spend this day, but just plan to be outside, with comfy shoes, a light purse, and all the time in the world to browse, stroll and look. If you do have your husband and kids with you, there is plenty for them to do in the green spaces, bring a football or glove, and enjoy being outside.
- TIP: if you are here for the cupcakes, let me recommend you come on inside and take advantage of the airstream selling pastries and cupcakes in the food court area. The line is always so long outside at the bakery area, that they’ve added a second spot inside and the line was so much shorter!
- LUNCH: Depending on when you at in the morning, you may or may not be hungry, but there are plenty of food options at the Silos, so just plan to park and walk all day long and shop, shop, shop. (did I mention this was a girlfriend’s weekend, husbands ask too many questions!)
- Check out the shops around the Silos including the Sweet Station, and The Findery. Seriously I’m so ready to have a new house to decorate so I can come back to The Findery for ALL THE THINGS.
- If you haven’t gotten enough of Chip and Jo’s artistry, check out the Little Shop on Bosque for markdowns and discontinued items. Located in Jo’s original store, this place is across town, but easy to get to once you’ve finished at the Silos area. There are snocones, sweet tea, and tacos all around, so you are in a really good place.
- After this, you may head back and rest for a bit before dinner, or go ahead and take in an early dinner before heading in for the evening.
- We took a little bit of time and took advantage of a nice Target and grabbed things we cannot get in our towns and looked around for extra home decor pieces that inspired us.
- Dinner options: Silos food truck area is open until 6, Milos Downtown, and Union Hall are my recommendations. Although Waco is like many major towns in Texas, you’ve also got a whole section of town with restaurants you would recognize by names like Cheddars, chili’s, or Rosa’s Cafe. I’m just one to eat a local spot any chance I get.
- Following dinner, we grabbed a bucket of ice cream and headed back to our Airbnb. We watched a movie, read books, and went to bed early….just because we could!
Saturday:
- Homestead Heritage was our main stop before heading home. But, with breakfast reservations, we spent the better part of 4 hours and could have stayed even longer
- Homestead Heritage is a faith-based community on the southeast end of Waco. It has grown and changed so much since I was there last. But, it captures my heart each time.
- We had breakfast reservations that were made a few weeks out. This was my first breakfast experience with them and it was so, so good. But, I’ve had lunch there as well and it was great. So, I just don’t think you can go wrong with the customer service and excellent food!
- Then, walk around and shop. Check out the craftsman shops and all the new places like the coffee shop, market, general store, and Quilt Barn. You could very easily park at the market, Cafe, or Blacksmith shop and walk to all the others. There is a hayride you can take from the Crafts Mall and learn more about the sights and sounds of the place.
- We started our drive back home in the early afternoon.
I’m not sure what else we would have added to the schedule had we had some time. There are many great spots for families, so we might have taken in the Cameron Zoo or participate in some of the water sport activities in the area, but this quick weekend was just the right amount of time to get away and have some fun girls time together.
